Last year I read Blueberries for Sal no less than 80 times to my son and he loved the book and the idea of having blueberries year round that he insisted we go blueberry picking twice. The first time bringing home about 2 lbs of blueberries and at least 3 more the second. Our favorite blueberry farm is Val’s Blueberry farm on Parker Street in East Longmeadow, MA. They are old school there and never pay any mind to children who eat 4 times more than they pick.

This year we brought our Florida friends to help us pick. With a 6, 4, 3, and 2 year old I honestly didn’t expect much picking to be done. Little did I know the 35 and 34 year old fathers would pick enough for all of us and then some! It was pretty funny when the farmer weighed our bucket and said “Wow! 6.8 lbs!” and we joked the rest of the day about competition and new careers.

So all the way home I felt like Bubba from Forrest Gump when I was listing off all the things we could make with the blueberries we picked. Blueberry pie, blueberry muffins, blueberry jam, blueberry smoothies, blueberries and cream, blueberry turnovers, blueberry cobbler…. mmm….
