Sometimes you do things for friends that aren’t necessarily convenient for you but mean the world to your friend. Yesterday I spent a few hours photographing a friends gardens and preparing a slide show for her to bring home to show her family in North Dakota. Since her family lives west of the middle-of-nowhere (seriously, it’s 3 hours to the airport!) only a few have traveled to MA to visit her. My friend is extremely proud of the things she has because she has worked really hard for them. She has tried, unsuccessfully she says, to capture the essence of her home and gardens and recently asked me if there was a chance I could stop by for some shots of her gardens. So I did. I spent an hour photographing the “story” of her yard. In the midst of this insane week I am having I dropped everything to do this and someone asked me why. Well, when my friend watched her slideshow and burst into tears of gratitude, then proceeded to show the images to every willing person she came across… that was my Why. Making my friend that happy may have meant more to me than the slideshow did for her. Or at least equally happy.

So although today’s image isn’t something anyone else could have shot, it is a reminder to me of why I love photography. I love telling people’s stories. And truth be told, I like making people cry with my pictures. That means I did my job and was either able to show them what I see, or capture things the way they see it and they had a profound emotional response to my images.
