Photo blog day 315, June 29, 2011

In complete contrast to the day of the June 1st Tornado the communities of Springfield came together under skies of deep blue and puffy white clouds. The City Council put on a fundraiser cookout to raise money to support families of Springfield that were financially impacted by the tornado. I expected the vibe of the public to be somewhat somber, given what had happened. But it was in fact quite cheerful. I overheard people sharing their stories of the day and, while most said that it was the most terrifying experience of their lives, the excitement in their voice said that they have moved on. It is a chapter finished. The City of Springfield is rebuilding and moving on. It is refreshing to see people come together like this. I’m sure the juicy burgers and great live music didn’t hurt either.

Side note – The church you see in the back is the Old First Church of Springfield. I wrote a post about it here.  And what is interesting is that it may very well be the most fragile building in the city. Despite the ferocious winds it sustained very little damage. And the rooster on the weathervane still stands. Ready to wake up its congregation at any time.
